Membership Information

Qualification for Membership

To qualify for membership in the CanonLawyer Clergy Assistance Plan, one must be a member of the Clergy of The Episcopal Church.  All ordained women and men, whether Bishop, Priest or Deacon who are subject to discipline under Title IV of the Canons adopted by General Convention are eligible, including active, retired and non-parochial members of the Clergy.

Canon IV.1, provides as follows:

"By virtue of Baptism, all members of the Church are called to holiness of life and accountability to one another. The Church and each Diocese shall support their members in their life in Christ and seek to resolve conflicts by promoting healing, repentance, forgiveness, restitution, justice, amendment of life and reconciliation  among all involved or affected. This Title applies to Members of the Clergy, who have by their vows at ordination accepted additional responsibilities and accountabilities for doctrine, discipline, worship and obedience."

Although "all members of the Church are called to holiness of life and accountability to one another," lay members of The Episcopal Church, including full-time lay employees, are not subject to discipline under Title IV.   Accordingly, they are not eligible for membership in the CanonLawyer Clergy Assistance Plan.
